Is Your Change Initiative a Business Problem or a Personal One?

I just read one of the most comical business articles I've ever seen.
I don't think the authors meant for it to be comical though.
The researchers discovered, CEOs who didn't win CEO awards, suddenly started buying more companies.
The researchers' conclusion? The acquisitions seemed to be less about "What's best for the company?" and more about "How do I get back in the spotlight?"
Which raises a question for me...
We spend a lot of time talking about employees making emotional decisions. How often do we acknowledge that executives do the same?
Every strategic decision is made by a human being, with an ego, who compare themselves to their peers and who wants to be remembered. And the title "CEO" doesn't make those things disappear.
The next time a CEO doesn't get the award they thought they were going to win, maybe the board should ask, "Are we solving a business problem...or a personal one?"
